Silverwood School is a committed to providing an appropriate, responsive and multi modal communication environment for each pupil, in order to ensure curriculum access and enhance their learning potential. We use the ‘Total Communication Approach’ and believe that all pupils need to be empowered to have their ‘voice.’ We use appropriate combinations of speech, Makaton™ signing, symbols, pictures, objects and sensory cues in order to increase pupils’ understanding and use of language
The school HCRG Speech and Language therapists, work alongside teachers, teaching assistants, parents/carers and a range of other professionals to support the communication, speech and language skills of pupils & students in every class.
This may include

• training
• advice to staff
• liaison with parents

We use appropriate combinations of speech, Makaton™ signing, symbols, pictures, objects and sensory cues in order to increase pupils’ understanding and use of language.
Our Therapists also deliver a comprehensive service to pupils (and their families) who experience difficulties with eating, drinking and swallowing.
Silverwood School also commissions additional Speech and Language support for the school from Ruth Jones, who is a private therapist. Ruth spends time across all three campuses and has been instrumental in staff training around Total Communication.
