At Silverwood School, we are committed to ensuring that all pupils can access the internet in a safe, supported, and age-appropriate way. Our approach to online safety is built into our curriculum, policies, and everyday practice, and is tailored to meet the needs of all our learners.
Keeping Pupils Safe Online
We teach our pupils how to use the internet safely through regular lessons, assemblies, and visual resources. These sessions are designed to be accessible and engaging, covering topics such as:
-
Keeping personal information private
-
Knowing what to do if something online makes you feel uncomfortable
-
Understanding online friendships and digital behaviour
-
Using mobile phones and apps safely
We base our teaching around the 4Cs of online safety: Content, Contact, Conduct and Commerce.
Pupils are always supervised when accessing the internet in school, and only visit sites that are age-appropriate and educational. Internet access is filtered and monitored, and staff regularly review usage and alerts through our monitoring systems, in partnership with Oakford Internet Services and Securus.
Working Together With Families
We believe that online safety is a partnership. Parents and carers are regularly informed about internet safety through newsletters, training sessions, and resources shared on our website. We also survey families to understand how technology is used at home, so we can offer guidance that reflects real-life experiences.
If a student brings a mobile device to school, it is collected at the start of the day and returned at the end. All digital behaviour is covered in PSHRSE and Computing lessons, including how to use mobile phones appropriately and what to do if a child feels unsafe.
Need Help or Advice?
If you ever have a concern about your child’s online activity or want advice about keeping them safe at home, please contact your campus team or speak to Terri Chard (DSL).
Together, we can help our pupils enjoy the benefits of the digital world while staying safe, confident, and in control.
