Introduction to supporting students with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities. (ASD, ADHD, dyslexia, learning difficulties, attachment disorders)
This session will grow an understanding about our role in supporting students with a range of needs. It gives key information about the main features of common special educational needs and the top strategies that we can use in our settings every day to truly make a difference. This will enable us to empower students to overcome their own barriers and optimise their academic, social and emotional progress. This session gives practical strategies that we can use straight away and that can be shared with colleagues to make learning even better in our settings.
Understanding Attachment Disorders and what we can REALLY do every day
The students who challenge us most in education are often students with problematic attachment patterns. Attachment disorders cause chaos, unhappiness and they seriously get in the way of learning for the individual and everyone in close proximity. This session explores the roots of attachment disorders and the strategies we can use to immediately improve outcomes and build better futures. This session gives practical strategies that we can use straight away and that can be shared with colleagues to make learning even better in our settings.
Understanding Dyslexia and making learning happen
Dyslexia is a specific learning difficulty that can seriously affect a young person’s chances of fulfilling their potential and fully engaging in learning. This session explores what dyslexia is and how we can use a range of strategies to empower young people to make academic progress, understand their learning journey and identify as successful learners. This session gives practical strategies that we can use straight away and that can be shared with colleagues to make learning even better in our settings.
Understanding Autistic Spectrum Conditions and building an inclusive school with reduced anxiety
Autistic spectrum conditions affect so many aspects of how a young person engages with school, their peers and teachers, and the process of learning. In this session we will explore what it means to have an autistic spectrum disorder and how high levels of anxiety cause huge barriers to progress and what we as individuals and whole schools can do about this. This session gives practical strategies that we can use straight away and that can be shared with colleagues to make learning even better in our settings.
Getting to grips with Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder and how to enable learning.
ADHD is caused by physical differences in the brain that have far reaching effects on a young person’s ability to successfully engage with their education. This session will explore what is really going on for people with ADHD and what we can do to enable young people with ADHD make academic and social progress. This session gives practical strategies that we can use straight away and that can be shared with colleagues to make learning even better in our settings.
Why SEND cause behaviour problems and how to restore order
Good behaviour is a set of very complex social skills and so the link between special educational needs and behaviour problems is enormous. This session explores the impact of common special educational needs (ASC, ADHD, dyslexia, learning difficulties, attachment disorders) on the ability to regulate behaviour and how we can support young people to do much better at acquiring and using the skills that they need. This session gives practical strategies that we can use straight away and that can be shared with colleagues to make learning even better in our settings.
What is pathological demand avoidance (PDA) and how can we support students who present with these difficulties
Students with Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA) find all demands stressful and schools are, by their nature, full of demands! Fortunately, there are strategies that all of us working in education can use to make life easier. This session will explore what it means to have PDA, how PDA is part of the autism spectrum and expert ways we can work with young people with PDA. This session gives practical strategies that we can use straight away and that can be shared with colleagues to make learning even better in our settings.
HOW TO REACH AND TEACH PUPILS WITH ADVERSE CHILDHOOD EXPERIENCES (ACES): WHAT WE ALL NEED TO KNOW AND DO
Abuse, parental separation, neglect, bullying, bereavement are just some of the difficulties that can combine to create toxic stress for the young people that we teach. The negative impact of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) can include low academic achievement, poor health and as much as a 20 year drop in life expectancy. Young people with four or more adverse childhood experiences are more likely to be labelled as lacking focus and having behavioural or cognitive difficulties. It does not have to be this way. All of us working in education can make a real and positive difference for children affected by ACEs. This session gives practical strategies that we can use straight away and that can be shared with colleagues to make learning even better in our settings.
